Guinea fowl or likhanga as they’re called in the Luhya language, are often seen as the cleanest birds around. In the past, they roamed freely in forests and bushes, living a wild life without domestication. Early attempts by our ancestors to raise them at home was not successful because they were known for being wild, restless and quite a handful to manage.<\/p>\n
There are several varieties of guinea fowl, but the Helmeted guinea fowl is the most common and widely kept. Other types include Crested guinea fowl, Pearl, White, Lavender and Royal Purple.<\/p>\n
As time went on, the Luhya community noticed that guinea fowl were being successfully domesticated in neighboring Uganda. This revelation turned the old belief on its head that these birds were unsuitable for homestead life, unlike chickens. Historically, guinea fowl were a rare sight in Luhya homes, where chickens were the go-to poultry. But today, that\u2019s starting to change as more families are getting into guinea fowl farming.<\/p>\n
The rising interest in guinea fowl comes from their clear benefits over chickens. They\u2019re cheap to keep, have a strong resistance to common poultry diseases, and are highly on demand on our local markets. Their meat and eggs are nutritious and command higher prices, making them a great choice for farmers.<\/p>\n
The Helmeted guinea fowl is the most commonly raised type in homesteads and often appears in traditional pyramid wall art.<\/p>\n
Guinea fowl serve as excellent natural alarm systems. They help protect other birds from predators and even teach younger birds how to roost safely at night. These social creatures don\u2019t like being alone and form strong bonds within their groups. Interestingly, they are believed to mate for life, showcasing a remarkable loyalty to their flocks<\/p>\n
The growing popularity of guinea fowl among the Luhya community reflects a positive shift in traditional farming practices. Once viewed as untamable and unsuitable for homestead life, these resilient birds have proven their value through successful domestication, economic benefits and cultural significance. Their ability to thrive with minimal care, resist diseases, provide nutritious meat and eggs, serve as natural guards makes them an attractive alternative to chickens.
