Barasa Awards Winners of Governor’s Cup Bonanza, Assures Kakamega of AFCON ReadinesKakamega Governor Dr. Fernandes Barasa Today awarded trophies and cash prizes to teams that participated in the 4th editionkaka of the Governor’s Cup, whose finale took place earlier this month.

The Governor urged teams that received prize money to invest at least 80 per cent of the funds in player welfare and development to motivate athletes and prepare them for the 5th edition of the Governor’s Cup, which will be held at the same venue in 2027 and will feature additional sporting disciplines.

He assured residents of Kakamega County that the region is on course to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), noting that Bukhungu Stadium will be fully completed by 2027 and ready to host international matches.

“Kakamega holds a wealth of talent, and in the 5th edition, I expect even more gifted players to be scouted through this tournament,” said Governor Barasa.

The Chief Officer for Youth and Sports, Lawrance Mukoyani, a celebrated icon from Malava, praised the initiative, saying the concluded Governor’s Cup has enabled many talented players to be scouted and signed by Kenyan Premier League clubs such as AFC Leopards, Kakamega Homeboyz and Gor Mahia.

Addressing the gathering, Mukoyani revealed that on January 28 and 29, the county government in partnership with the United States of America, will host another tournament at the same venue aimed at scouting talented players who will earn scholarships to study in the USA.

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Social Services Sports Youth,l Gender and Culture, Jackline Masicha commended county staff for their hard work and resilience, which contributed significantly to the success of the tournament.

Machine FC – KSh 1,000,000

St. Paul’s FC – KSh 500,000

Girls’ Soccer

Promised Ladies (Mumias East) – KSh 1,500,000

Shireen Girls – KSh 1,000,000

Bafana Bafana – KSh 500,000

Classic FC – KSh 250,000

The top boys’ team walked away with KSh 2 million, while the girls’ champions receiv

ed KSh 1.5 million.
