Residents of Kambi ya Mwanza in Malava witnessed the vibrant spirit of Bunge la Mwananchi, embracing the grassroots forum with enthusiasm and hope. Since its introduction to Malava, the initiative has provided locals with an open platform to discuss, question and analyse issues affecting their community.
Under the leadership of President Soita Imboga, the forum continues to mobilise residents to express their views freely and without fear. The concept of Bunge la Mwananchi was popularised by the late Raila Odinga, who strongly championed freedom of expression and public participation. Similar forums, Kamukunji gatherings, gained national prominence and inspired communities across Kenya to establish their own platforms in line with their constitutional right to public engagement.
Following the recent by-election that saw David Ndakwa elected, residents have urged him to prioritise the improvement of the road network within the sub-county. While acknowledging progress in the education sector including the commissioning of a laboratory at Shamberere Junior School, school bus to Namagara and Kimangโeti girls stoley doom. Locals stressed that development should extend beyond education. They called on the new leader to deliver on the promises made during the campaign period. On a scale of 10 residents described it as average, scoring it five out of ten. They noted that tangible progress across all sectors would significantly enhance his chances of re-election.
On national politics, some residents expressed concern over the unity of the Luhya community. They argued that if leaders such as Moses Wetangula and Musalia Mudavadi are unable to unite the community, space should be given to emerging leaders like George Natembeya and Edwin Sifuna to guide its political direction.
At the county level, residents emphasised the importance of respecting the two-term limit, provided that those in office deliver on key development projects such as the dairy meal initiative at Tumbeni and the cooler project in Kimangโeti. On the performance of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), many residents indicated that most would score poorly, citing underperformance as a major concern.
The forum has also challenged young people across Malava to register as voters and actively participate in the next General Election.
Within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), some members criticised Oburu Odinga, accusing him of misdirecting the party. They argued that he should exercise greater prudence in decision-making, noting that his late brother, Raila Odinga, had previously supported and inaugurated Edwin Sifuna as Secretary-General.
Residents across Malava have been encouraged to remain open-minded and freely share their views on matters affecting the sub-county. Bunge la Mwananchi Malava, which remains a people-driven initiative, has vowed to continue moving across all wards to sensitise residents, hold leaders accountable, and push for action where promises have not been fulfilled.
