The Rise and Silent Fall of Mungai Eve: A Digital Empire Lost

  • In 2021, Everlyne Mungai skyrocketed to fame, becoming a key figure in the Kenyan digital revolution. At her height, she boasted over 750,000 subscribers and earned around $13,000 a month (about KSh 1.5 million). Together with her then-boyfriend, Bonaventure Onyanja Kabatia, and Director Trevor, they built an impressive media empire. But after their dramatic breakup, many fans were left wondering how everything crumbled so quickly.

Hailing from Murangโ€™a, just a 90-minute drive from Nairobi, Eve had a natural charm and a genuine love for journalism. Although she started studying media, her aspirations nearly came to a halt when financial struggles forced her to drop out. Then, in early 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic brought the country to a standstill, Eve faced a tough choice: return to her village or tackle the challenging job market in Nairobi. It was during this uncertain time that she crossed paths with Trevor, a videographer who recognized her untapped potential. Despite lacking industry connections and fancy equipment, they dedicated themselves to filming content every Saturday.
In September 2020, Eve uploaded her first video, it went viral, kicking off a new chapter. Her big break came when she started showcasing stories that mainstream media often overlooked. By interviewing “Sheng-speaking” street musicians, led by Safari Gathimiti from Umoja, she found her unique voice.
Her approach was refreshingly straightforward: spotlight a trending personality and let them share their story in their own words. Meanwhile, Trevor took on the roles of businessman, editor, and strategist. Within just nine months, they reached 100,000 subscribers and earned the YouTube Silver Plate Button. The couple, who once faced hardships, were now living in style, enjoying luxury apartments, designer outfits, and extravagant weekend getaways.
By 2022, Mungai Eve had transformed from a YouTuber into a genuine Kenyan celebrity. Even seasoned journalists from mainstream media started to take notice of her straightforward yet captivating interview style. The very celebrities who once brushed off her calls were now eager to secure a spot on her show.
But then, things began to unravel in early 2023. Whispers of a private separation emerged, even though the couple tried to project an image of togetherness. The pressure eventually became too much to handle. Trevor revealed that their disagreements were primarily about money.
“Eve and I had a 50-50 share agreement. But at one point, Eve felt she deserved more because she was the ‘face’ of the brand. She wanted an 80% share,” Trevor shared during an interview on the Iko Nini podcast.
The fallout was complete. Director Trevor took over the original channel and rebranded all social media to Kenya Online Media (KOMM). Effectively pushed out of her own platform, Eve had to start from scratch.
Although her new channel initially took off gaining 100,000 subscribers in just five days the excitement didnโ€™t last long. Her later uploads lacked the finesse of her earlier work, and viewership became hit or miss. By 2025, the once-thriving interviewer, who had dominated the digital scene, had mostly gone quiet.
The saga of Mungai Eve and Director Trevor serves as a cautionary tale for anyone in the social media realm. It highlights the challenges of blending romance with business. While Eveโ€™s talent revolutionized how Kenyans consume news, her decline illustrates that being the “face” of a brand doesnโ€™t equate to owning the “assets,” like the channel itself.
As of 2025, Eve has remained largely silent. Her journey is a reminder that internet fame can rise rapidly, but it can also fade just as quickly if thereโ€™s no clear understanding of ownership. Whether sheโ€™ll make a significant comeback is still up in the air, but her story is undeniably a key chapter in Kenyaโ€™s YouTube narrative
