Edwin Sifuna assumed the role of Secretary-General (SG) of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in February 2018, succeeding Ababu Namwamba during the party’s National Delegates Convention at Kasarani. While he had served as the acting SG since Namwamba’s departure in 2016, his formal appointment and confirmation as the substantive spokesperson took place in 2018.
As a renowned lawyer, Sifuna has executed his mandate effectively, particularly when representing the party in legal and strategic matters. Though his tenure has been fraught with challenges, he has remained firm in his decisions.sifuna with current odm party leader oburu Odinga
Before the party leader, Raila Amollo Odinga, breathed his last, Sifuna’s sentiments were always noted for being direct and to the point. His eloquent debating style—both on national television and within the corridors of Parliament—has made him a popular figure and a “darling of the people.”
Since the passing of Raila Odinga, ODM has been embroiled in internal wars of words. However, a meeting yesterday between Sifuna, James Orengo, and Babu Owino appears to have shifted the party’s tone, signaling a potential new direction for the movement.
The coming weeks will reveal whether the newfound harmony seen in yesterday’s meeting is a lasting truce or a temporary reprieve. One thing remains certain: with Edwin Sifuna at the helm of the secretariat, ODM possesses a firm, articulate voice as it seeks to redefine its identity in a rapidly changing political landscape.
